On December 12-13, 2023, The Miami-Dade Transportation Planning Organization (TPO),
in partnership with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), hosted a two-day
workshop to discuss roadway safety design principles and provide planners, engineers and
designers the foundation needed to address the needs of bicyclists and improve roadway
safety features utilizing the best design methods. Various transportation agencies
throughout South Florida attended.
The Florida Department of Transportation is well aware that building safe roads does not in itself solve the problem of traffic fatalities and injuries. With this in mind the Community Traffic Safety Program was developed.
The goal of the Community Traffic Safety Program is to reduce the number and severity of traffic crashes through a comprehensive, multi-jurisdictional, multi-disciplinary approach. This is accomplished through the 4-E approach. Law Enforcement, Emergency Services, Education, and Engineering.
An effective way for communities to accomplish this goal using these resources is through the development of (CTST) Community Traffic Safety Teams. The members of these teams should include individuals who share a true interest in addressing the traffic safety concerns of their community. The teams can be City wide, County wide, or even a local community that wants to address their specific traffic concerns.
Ride Smart Florida is the communication and outreach extension of the Florida Motorcycle Safety Coalition, a group of safety partners from around the state who share the common goal of reducing fatalities of motorcycle riders and their passengers. Ride Smart Florida uses data-driven research to develop, implement and evaluate counter measures and works with safety partners around the state to reduce fatalities and serious injuries to motorcycle riders and their passengers.
