On October 29th, FDOT staff gathered with some of the Miami-Dade County partners outside of the Government Center to showcase the projects and plans helping to create more enjoyable active transportation facilities and experiences in the community. The event was titled Destinations Between and included topics ranging from bicycle and pedestrian safety to planning efforts to upcoming projects. During the event, participants were given opportunities to get bike lights and be fit with helmets, give feedback on where they would like to see bicycle facilities through interactive displays; take surveys; receive safety information; learn about the upcoming trail projects and protected bicycle lanes; engage with FDOT and the Miami-Dade partners, and take pictures, play yard games, and watch an informative slideshow presentation. This event was able to capture the attention of audiences ranging from commuters using the public transit system, to downtown employees, to the Critical Mass bike ride participants which take place the last Friday of each month. While the event was able to assist FDOT and its partners in engaging those that are oftentimes not engaged in projects and plans, the event was also successful in helping to strengthen the relationships between the agencies and organizations that actively participated.
What is Destinations Between? It is the recognition that our destinations are not the only places in our lives, but that the places in between, our roadways, bikeways, trails, and sidewalks, are vital components impacting our quality of life, the health of our residents, and the strength of community.
